    Surface Texture Analysis (2006-2009)

    Surface Texture Analysis with wavelet Transform for Product Quality Monitoring

    Sponsoring Agency: Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi Scheme: Women Scientist Scheme Status: Completed (2006-2009) This work focuses on applying the wavelet based multiresolution approaches to the problem of surface texture analysis for product quality monitoring in case of machined surfaces. Surface roughness measurement and surface inspection are the two problems for which machine vision based approaches are proposed. The engineered textured surfaces have various quantitative roughness measures that specify the quality of the surface. Thus measuring the surface gives a way to both defining and judging the surface. The proposed method is the novel approach for surface roughness evaluation that implements dual-tree complex wavelet transform emphasizing selection of effective texture descriptors for classification of surfaces according to their roughness values. Thus the proposed contact-free method may replace the traditional stylus profiling system for roughness measurement and will be economical than modern optical methods. Further the novel techniques have been proposed that apply the heuristics used by human inspectors for detecting defects like scratches, dents, differed finish, broken corners or cracks etc. on metallic objects. Results of both of the tasks are encouraging giving classification accuracy of 95%. The integrated system can be used as effective Product Quality Monitoring System in industry where metallic parts and components are being manufactured with various machining processes and where surface finish is an important concern for quality control. Further the proposed system attempts t o inspect a surface for possible defects and can help to avoid major economic losses. The machine vision offers accuracy, consistency and low cost solution to the problem of subjectivity, fatigue and high cost associated with the human inspectors.

    Breast Cancer Diagnosis (2010-2013)

    Exploring Image Analysis Techniques for Detection and Classification of Malignant Breast Lesions

    Sponsoring Agency: Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi Scheme: SERC Fast Track Young Scientist Scheme Status: Completed (2010-2013) Breast Cancer is the most commonly occurring female cancer in the world. It accounts for 23% of all newly occurring cancers in women worldwide and represents 13.7% of all cancer deaths. Histopathology is the study of signs of disease using the microscopic examination of a biopsy or surgical specimens that is processed and fixed onto glass slides. This work specifically focuses on computer-aided-diagnosis of breast cancer. It analyses histopathology images of breast tissues and categorizes the image as benign (normal) or malignant (cancerous). Also it detects type of cancer. Various approaches are implemented exploring image processing algorithms to detect and classify breast carcinoma. The work is carried out with annotated datasets available in public domain. For few of the approaches with the help of practicing pathologists, the ground truth regarding cell nuclei is prepared and further used for evaluating the performance of algorithms. Various methods of cell segmentation are developed resolving overlaps of cells which is one of the important challenges in image understanding affecting on feature extraction and classification task. These cell segmentation algorithms have shown significant results. The parallelization of the seed detection algorithm is carried out successfully providing speed up of 34X. The approach is able to resolve the overlaps of the cells too. So this would be a significant contribution in the state-of-art.

    3D Object Reconstruction (2013-2014)

    Fast 3D Object Reconstruction using Parallel Processing

    Sponsoring Agency: WCE, Sangli Scheme: TEQIP-II Status: Completed (2013-2014) Integral Imaging (II) is a part of Multiview imaging which is based on century old principle and has been renovated because of improvement in photoelectronic sensors and exponential increase in computational power. In Integral Imaging, elemental images (EIs) are processed to reconstruct 3D scene by using ray back propagation algorithm. The proposed work focuses on serial and parallel implementation of 3D object reconstruction algorithms. As parallel technique uses multiple processors, it can significantly accelerate 3D scene reconstruction in II. In parallel technique, the multiple cores of CPU are exploited to improve the speedup. II offers relatively inexpensive way to capture 3D information and to visualize it computationally. In this work, implementation of sequential as well as parallel 3D object reconstruction algorithm is carried out. Further the work is extended to reconstruct partially occluded 3D objects. For 3D object reconstruction, input images are required. These input images are called as elemental images. These elemental images are main dataset used for object reconstruction. As such datasets are not available in public domain the task of acquisition of elemental images is carried out with the help of specialized setup. This dataset can further be used by the researchers who want to work in this area.

    Cognitive Vision (2016-2019)

    Intelligent Cognitive Vision support for an independent lifestyle of elderly people

    Sponsoring Agency: Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi Scheme: Cognitive Science Research Initiative (CSRI) Status: About to start (2016-2019) Cognitive vision systems are meant for encapsulating robust, resilient and adaptable computer vision systems with a cognitive sense: the ability to learn, adapt, weigh alternative solutions, and develop new strategies for analysis and interpretation. Many elderly people require special care and attention under certain circumstances. However, availing such care and attention is expensive and a 24X7 support is not always possible, nor it is needed. Home assistance systems come into picture to allow the elderly to live in their own home, while giving them the needed support at the time of emergency. The proposed work is development of intelligent support system for elderly people living alone in their homes. It is based on state-of-the-art computer vision techniques. Cameras will be installed to acquire the videos which will be processed and analyzed automatically. The system will consist of analysis of human behaviors and looking for changes in their activities. In case of a detected emergency (e.g. the person has fallen, or is attacked, or having abnormal behavior due to health reasons) an alert signal will be sent to the designated assistants (e.g. care givers/ relatives).

Abstract

Surface Metrology deals with study of surface textures. This work is an attempt to use wavelets as a tool for analyzing surface textures of engineered surfaces. We focused on roughness evaluation of surfaces. We used various wavelet bases for analyzing and extracting features from texture images. Experimentation is carried out using standard deviation (SD), weighted standard deviation (WSD), energy, entropy, kurtosis and their combinations as texture descriptors. The feature combination of WSD, entropy and kurtosis gives good results over all other texture descriptors. We also compared various distance metrics used as similarity measures while classifying the textures into the appropriate roughness classes. Experiments are carried out with five wavelet bases and nine distance metrics. The comparative results are presented. It is found that Battle-Lemarie wavelets perform well with proposed feature set and cosine distance metric. Three surface texture databases namely Milling, Casting and Shaping are used for experimentation. The overall classification performance is 79%.
