Seth Gulabchand Research Foundation

Evaluation Committee appointed by the Government of India in 1973 assessed the College as one of the best Institutions in Maharashtra and recommended extending the R&D facilities for Industries &Entrepreneurs. On the occasion of Silver Jubilee in the same year, the Administrative Council of the College thought it fit to use the college laboratories & infrastructure facilities for the broader purpose of helping the industries in the nearby areas. With this in mind the Council approved the idea of a Research Foundation to be named after Late. Seth Gulabchand Hirachand Doshi (1898–1967) [the scion of Walchand group, noted industrialist, philanthropist and a Nationalist and closely associated with development of the college during 1950 till 1965] and the Walchand Trust donated a substantial amount towards it. Other Industrialists, local bodies. Co-operative societies also came forward in generously building up the amount of this foundation.

The objects of the foundation are:

  • Application oriented research work in the fields of Engineering and Agriculture.

  • Product / Process development and improvement.

  • Prototype manufacture, testing and evaluation of refined design.

  • Evaluation of special purpose machines, test rigs, processes etc.

  • Consultancy Services


  • Survey and Design of complete water supply system.

  • Waste Water Disposal Scheme.

  • Treatment plant design for waste water of Industries.

  • Effluent treatment for sugar industries. 5, Air Pollution Survey.


    Command area survey, planning, design, estimate and project report and other problems connected with Lift Irrigation Schemes, such as water hammer in rising mains, silt entry in Intake and Jack wells, etc.


    Bearing capacity opinion, directing soil exploration for design of building foundations, Laboratory testing in this connection and making soil exploration report[ excluding necessary drilling operation], Stability analysis for dams and embankments.


  • Design of R. C. C. structures including shells, folded plates, flat slabs, multistorey structures, water tanks, silos, shear walls etc.

  • Design of prestressed Concrete structures.

  • Design of steel structures like trusses, transmission towers, workshop sheds etc.

  • Design of highway or rail bridges [ R. C. C., prestressed or steel ]

  • Concrete mix design.


  • Stress Analysis Problems.

  • Vibration Problems.

  • Problems of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.


  • Problems associated with the operation of power systems.


  • Advice and Guidance for setting up of Laboratories in Industries.

  • Instrumentation system to industries.

  • Electronic Control for Process Industries

    Over the last few years Civil Department faculty is actively engaged in assisting the local industries in solving their technical problems. Some of the Products / Processes developed by the department are :

  • Design of Control equipment for Pollution

  • Anaerobic lagoon treatment for distilleries 8- water effluents

  • High rate dual media filters using Indian bituminous coal

  • Design and fabrication of surface aerators and Qxidation ditch rotors for waste treatment plants

  • Recovery of wax from press mud of sugar factories


    Mechanical department has developed following products useful for industries and research :

  • 300 mm. diffused light transmission Polariscope.

  • Reflection Polariscope

  • Thrust and Ball bearing testing machines

  • Thermal conductivity of Insulating materials apparatus

  • Groundnut decorticator. 6. Ammonia injection apparatus. 7. Solar Heaters


    Amongst several products developed by the department, to mention a few are:

  • Transistorized automatic voltage regulator for alternators upto 10 KVA

  • Transistorized automatic star—delta starters with single phasing preventers for squirrel cage induction motors


    Electronics department is active in developing gadgets useful for industries. A few gadgets developed are :

  • Digital C

  • Frequency Counter

  • Remote Sensing Tachometer

  • Automatic Furnace Temperature Controller

  • Automatic Voltage Stabiliser



    Routine testing of Soils, Filter Criteria Test, Insitu Plate bearing test, soil tests required for highway construction and fie!d tests in connection with the design of dams and embankments


    Routine tests required by portability standards for water. Tests for determining the B. 0. D. and C. 0. D. of sewage and industrial wastes


    Testing facilities are available for the routine tests on Metals, Cement, Sand, Aggregate, Bricks, Tiles, Stone and Concrete, Structural elements testing for Ultimate loads.


    I. S. I. Mark testing of oil engines, centrifugal pumps, sluice valves, fuel and oil testing, testing of hoists and other equipments


    Testing of motors upto 10 H. P. Testing of high voltage bushings. Testing of Transformer oils


    Testing and Calibration of Electronic equipment

    In 1947, WCE was founded in Sangli with just over 60 students. Today, it has more than 4,000 students taking various courses in Engineering and Technology.
